The Savelli Family
The Savelli family was one of the oldest noble dynasties in Rome. Counting two Popes and seven cardinals among their ancestors, the Savellis were marshals of the Holy Roman Church and principal guardians of the Conclave.
We find traces of this glorious past scattered around Rome's city center and outskirts, in the Castelli area. The family possessed the Castel Gandolfo, Castel Savello, Albano, Rocca Priora, Palombara Sabina, and Ariccia. In the historic center, Teatro Marcello with the adjacent Monte Savello, area nearby Vicolo Savelli, Via di Monserrato, and the area surrounding the Parco Savello on the Aventine hill, all belonged to the Savellis.
Although the main branch of the family became extinct between the 18th and the 19th centuries, some collateral lines survived and thrived.
